The situation in Tigray is worsening

The UN Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) has urged all parties to act responsibly to reduce tensions before the situation in Tigray worsens.

In a statement today, the Commission's spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, reiterated the call of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, for continued international pressure to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control, and urged the UN Human Rights Commission to help calm tensions in Tigray through dialogue and political engagement.

In a statement on Tuesday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called on the international community to make coordinated and sustained efforts to apply pressure before the current uncertainty in Tigray escalates further.

The UN Human Rights Commission spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, warned that the issues should not be addressed through violence, as a return to armed conflict would create a difficult situation to manage and could worsen the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

To reduce tensions, all parties must act responsibly. Volker Turk emphasized that the situation remains highly unstable and the consequences could be severe.

The international community has also called for "coordinated and sustained efforts" to ease tensions.
